The Outer Limits

Welcome to the Outer Limits!

We hope you enjoy your visit here and find what it is you're looking for.  The site is really about the Outer Banks of North Carolina and how life is for the permanent residents of this spit of sand we call home.  The entire Outer Banks is some 100 miles in length but has been associated with the towns of Nags Head, Duck and Corolla for most visitors. Unfortunately, there are vast stretches that are never seen by most tourists and many residents but they are worth a look/see, I think you'd be surprised by what you will find.  This has been the homes of fishermen, mariners and pirates for centuries.  This section of pages will, over time, cover many subjects, ideas and thought about the Outer Banks.  Out of all the places one could call home, this place is unique.  This was the first attempt at establishing a colony for Jolly Old England.  Powered Flight was also invented here.  Blackbeard called it home as well.

The quality of life here has also been categorized and driven by tourism..  When we used to vacation here years ago, we had the very same impressions of the life of relaxation and enjoyment that everyone else has developed.  It seemed the ideal spot to live and work.  I did a lot of research from all of the usual sources available in libraries and the like and arrived at all of the conclusions that one would arrive at when relying upon those sources as authoritative.  The real world view is quite different in very subtle ways but in the sum total, anyone who thinks that they can live here and "get away from it all" has to actually live here a while to understand just what they've gotten themselves in to.  If you aren't ready for some major adjustments in your lifestyle expectations, you won't do well at all.  However, after our period of adjustment, and the inability to shop anywhere but Wal-Mart and the Big K, you should be able to survive. Thank God for the Internet and High-Speed access to shopping sites.

Also, The Outer Banks has been shaped by the near shore ocean currents and the Gulf Stream. That metrological dynamic also has the ability to influence the track of Hurricanes and we have experienced more than our share of them in the 14 years we have been here. Go to this link (OBX Hurricanes) to see the names and dates of those as well as an extremely informatioal page on Atlantic Storm tracks since records have been kept.

Also, visit OBX Outdoors for a peek at many of the outdoor activities that are available in and around Dare County. Fishing, boating, nature trails and off the beat places to visit on the Dare Mainland.
