The 1903 Wright Flyer |
Kitty Hawk's main claim to fame is that of being the site where the Wright Brothers conducted their early experiments in controlled flight as well as making the world's first powered, heavier that air flight in what is now the airplane. Although the actual site now sits in Kill Devil Hills, it was Kitty Hawk then as there were no other named township 1903. It was nice to see that no one attempted to re-write the history books just because Kill Devil Hills (KDH) became a township in 1953. Kitty Hawk is also our home. On these connected pages, there will be links that cover events that took place during 2003 which was the Centennial of Powered Flight. It was a week-long celebration culminating in an attempted recreation of that flight, concerts, exhibits and flyovers of historic aircraft. Dayton, Ohio may make the claim that it is the "Birthplace of Aviation", but it is Kitty Hawk, North Carolina where the first flight actually happened.
