2003 Flight Reenactment |
This grouping of pages contains links to some of the pages of the events and people that participated in the celebration of the Centinneal of Flight in December of 2003. It was a 6 day long event culminating in the attempted recreation of the first flight by an exact replica of the 1903 flyer built by the Wright Experience. I say attempted because weather was horrible with heavy rains and dense fog. I have confidence that the recreation would have been successful but the Wright Brothers would never have tried to fly on a day such as this. The replicated flyer was successfully flown before and after December, 2003 by the group that had faithfully rebuilt this airplane. President Bush and gave a brief speech and some time later in the day Air Force One did a fly-by but you could barely see the plane through the fog such was the weather. Gail and I left as soon as the first attempt at a recreation was over. It was either wait a few more hours or suffer hypothermia. Besides, instead of Ray Charles being the musical entertainment (he was ill), we got Lee Greenwood. What a screwjob that was! And an extensive fly over by nothing but historic aircraft also had to be cancelled for the final day which I would have liked to have seen as would the rest of the attendees. Below is a panoramic, stitched photo of the event ground taken on 16 December, 2003.
