Homey and Jeter Plan an Attack

Homer

Homer is a Treeing Walker Hound that we rescued from Currituck County in September of 2002, after he was found to be abandoned. His health was in horrible shape and he was grossly underweight and very traumatized. The Currituck Humane Society had him and a good friend of Gail's contacted her about him. His spirit was broken and top of it all, he was totally deaf as a result of an untreated ear infection.

So, of course, he was soon on his way to our house as a foster dog so he wouldn't be euthanized because he was at the Dog Pound long enough. It was tough for him to fit in as our other dogs already had a hierarchy set and Homer had to find his place. As you can see from the pictures, Homer has done very well and one of his hobbies was to bust Gail's chops and to rip all the rolls of toilet paper from their holders and run through the house with them. This went on for months until we we brought Jeter home which is our 2 year old Labrador Retriever. They hit it off right away and now both of them bust Gail's chops as well as to play tug with each other until that toy is destroyed. Then it's time to attack Snickers--that goes on for a few minutes out in the yard at full tilt run. Then it's time for them to take a nap until supper. As is a trait of his breed, Homer need a place to run and exercise which, luckily, we have plenty of room in the yard for that.

Since we adopted Homer, Gail has found homes for many other Walker Hounds, also found abandoned (or lost)in Currituck County. It's a shame that there is so much irresponsibility with a few hunters and their dogs there but, as with any segment of a population, there are always a few idiots mixed in. Many hunters place a high value on their hunting dogs but it's the few that don't that make it tough to argue that it isn't inhumane.
